CBD for Insomnia

In a report titled Why Lack Of Sleep Is Bad For Your Health, the NHS laid bare the many detrimental effects that even a short spell of sleep deprivation has on the body.

Although some individuals require less, the golden standard of sleep is generally considered to be eight hours per night. But if you wake up in the morning feeling unrested and pining for the next opportunity to steal forty winks, you could very well be falling short of your personal sleep requirements.

Effects of Insomnia

Lack of sleep can cause a ripple effect of consequential ailments – both mentally and physically. At the very least, poor rest can lead to feelings of irritability and reduced ability to concentrate, but when experiencing persistent insomnia, serious health risks such as obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes all become a very real possibility.

Adequate sleep is vital in ensuring overall wellbeing, promoting a strong immune system, a functioning metabolism, a healthy reproductive system and many, many more important bodily operations. So, how can you make sure you’re getting enough of it?

First off, it’s important to consider the many factors that can affect your ability to get a restful night’s sleep. The Mayo Clinic suggests that mental health disorders such as anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and depression can all play a major role in our ability to drift off. The same is true for certain medications, chronic pain conditions and environmental factors like noise, temperature or uncomfortable bedding.

Study on Insomnia

A survey conducted in 2018 by Health Organisation Chemist 4 U examining the sleep habits of two-thousand British adults aged eighteen to fifty-five over a period of two days found that only 6% of the participants managed to achieve the recommended eight hours of sleep. The survey also found that the average UK adult sleeps for just six-and-a-half hours per night.

With the issue of inadequate sleep affecting such a huge percentage of the population and permeating so many areas of an individual’s life, the need for an effective, natural sleep aid has never been greater.

Study on CBD and Insomnia

But what are the options for those suffering from this destructive affliction? We firmly believe that tackling sleep issues requires a holistic approach in order to address the root cause of the problem rather than just dealing with the insomnia itself. That’s why CBD is a great choice for so many people: because it has the potential to address the underlying causes of sleeplessness which in turn, could lead to an improvement in the quality and quantity of sleep.

This notion is supported by a study published in 2019 by the National Center for Biotechnology Information which examined the effects of CBD on insomnia and anxiety. The study observed a group of seventy-two participants, forty-seven of which experienced symptoms of anxiety and the remaining twenty-five suffering from persistent insomnia.

Each day for three months, the participants were given a 25mg CBD oral capsule. By the end of the trial, fifty-seven patients reported a decrease in anxiety and sleep scores improved within the first month in forty-eight patients

The reason for this positive outcome could be because of CBD’s ability to interact with our body’s natural Endocannabinoid Systema communications network within the body and brain responsible for creating a harmonious balance between the two and in turn, promoting a healthy appetite, improved mood and better sleep
