The Antioxidative Properties of CBD

With each scientific study surrounding CBD, an incredible discovery about the healing properties of this uniquely-therapeutic compound seems to swiftly follow. Hailed for its potentially-beneficial effects on the overall wellbeing of mind and body, evidence suggests that CBD may also boast extremely effective antioxidant qualities which could help to safeguard against the damaging effects of free-radicals.

But what exactly are free-radicals and how can CBD act as our main ally in waging the ongoing war against them?

What are Free Radicals?

To understand the concept of free-radicals requires some basic knowledge of chemistry and the function of electrons and atoms within the body.

The human body is coursing with atoms which are surrounded by electrons wrapped up in an outer layer known as a ‘shell’. These shells must be filled with a specific number of electrons in order for that electron to be considered complete by the body. If these shells are not complete, i.e. not filled with the required number of electrons, then that atom is likely to bond with another atom and use that atom’s electrons to complete its outer shell. These types of atoms are known as free radicals and differ from atoms with a full outer shell because they react extremely quickly to other substances in an effort to compensate for their lack stability brought about by the absence of a complete outer shell.

Oxidative Stress

This instability and constant seeking of other atoms and molecules to bond with to begins an effect known as oxidative stress and can have detrimental effects on the body’s cells, causing them to weaken and become more vulnerable to damage and disease. This, in turn, leads to the body exhibiting various physical signs of aging including wrinkles, dark circles and loss of volume in the face, as well as a host of health effects such as diabetes, atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity / metabolic syndrome and neuro-degenerative disorders such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, to name but a few.

How Can CBD Help to Combat Oxidative Stress?

Whilst the human body can produce its own antioxidants to help combat the degenerative effects of oxidative stress, it can’t produce enough to defuse the harmful effects of external influences such as environmental pollution, poor diet and tobacco smoke. This is where the body needs a little extra help in the form of making smart dietary choices which includes antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, carrying out adequate amounts of physical exercise and reducing our exposure to toxins like drugs, alcohol, pesticides and contaminants.

A study published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information titled Cannabidiol as an Emergent Therapeutic Strategy for Lessening the Impact of Inflammation on Oxidative Stress suggests that CBD could be a tremendously useful component in our artillery against oxidative stress.

The report, which examines the effects of CBD on a number of ailments affected by oxidative stress, states that

“CBD would seem to be a promising starting point for further drug development given its anti-oxidant (although relatively modest) and anti-inflammatory actions on immune cells, such as macrophages and microglia.”

The report goes on to conclude that:

“studies on models of human diseases support the idea that CBD attenuates (reduces) inflammation far beyond its antioxidant properties, for example, by targeting inflammation-related intracellular signalling events.”

You can harness the incredible therapeutic properties of CBD via a variety of methods, including oral CBD drops, inhalable vape e-liquids and with edible products like gummies or hard candies. But, with free-radicals playing such a huge roll in the physical aging process, why not try introducing some protective, restorative CBD products into your skincare routine to help stave off these undesirable effects?
