CBD is an abbreviation of cannabidiol and is a compound extracted from the hemp plant. It has been reported to have excellent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, analgesic and neuroprotective qualities. In 2016 it became legal in the UK to sell CBD, or products containing CBD. Since then, CBD has continued to rise in popularity, however, there remains some confusion over the origin of this potential wonder ingredient.
First, let’s be clear: Cannabis, Hemp and Marijuana are NOT the same thing.
Quite simply, CBD comes from the hemp plant. Hemp is a variety of the cannabis plant species that contains very low amounts of THC (the chemical that makes marijuana psychoactive). It cannot make you high. At Green Stem, the CBD we use is completely THC-free and we test every batch to confirm this.
CBD is available in a variety of different forms designed for various styles of consumption. There are CBD vape e-liquids which are inhaled with the use of an e-cigarette, sublingual CBD oral drops which are taken under the tongue and topical oils, creams and sprays which are applied directly to the skin.
The human body is capable of producing its own endocannabinoids, but phytocannabinoids are known to help to kickstart our central regulatory system and provide the beneficial effects you’ve no doubt heard so much about.
The Benefits of CBD
There are many reported benefits associated with the use of CBD. It has been known to reduce inflammation in the body, making it an effective aid in combatting everything from acne to chronic muscular pain. Other studies such as the WHO Cannabidol Report suggest that CBD can be used to calm the symptoms of anxiety and insomnia, promoting a harmonious balance between mind and body.
CBD also contains more powerful antioxidant properties than vitamins such as vitamin C and E, making it useful in the treatment of a wide variety of illnesses such as age-related pain and autoimmune diseases.
WHO’s Cannabidiol report also suggests that CBD has been found to be neuroprotective, which means that it can help maintain and regulate brain health. This in turn helps to limit neurological damage following events such as stroke or trauma and can be effective in aiding the treatment of brain-related diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and many more.
However, this is but scratching the surface of the potential benefits of CBD. Many people use CBD products for a variety of different reasons and we recommend that you carry out your own research from the wealth of information available online to learn more about how CBD can help you with your particular ailments. We think you’ll be surprised at just how versatile CBD can be…
Where does CBD come from?
Where does CBD come from?
CBD comes from the hemp plant, which is a variety of the cannabis plant species containing very low amounts of THC (the compound which gives marijuana its psychoactive properties and makes you ‘high’). Many people confuse the term hemp with illegal marijuana, but hemp actually refers to the non-psychoactive plant that is grown for its fibre and seeds.
CBD is the second most abundant chemical in the cannabis plant and makes up to 40% of its extracts. In the UK it is legal to grow, process and market hemp and hemp products with a licence, so most CBD products available in the UK have been extracted from hemp.
The Extraction Process
The Extraction Process
When we talk about extraction, we are referring to the method of removing the CBD from the rest of the plant matter and compounds within the hemp plant.
When it comes to extracting CBD, the gold standard is the CO2 extraction process, which uses pressurised carbon dioxide (CO2) to ‘pull’ CBD from the plant and effectively separate it from the psychoactive compounds in the plant.
This allows you to enjoy CBD products like the Green Stem collection without worrying about experiencing any of the ‘high’ or physical impairments associated with cannabis use.
