What is the entourage effect?

All cannabinoids, compounds and terpenes found in the cannabis plant have individual effects, but there is a phenomenon where when they all work together, they produce something called the entourage effect. We've provided an overview on the entourage effect and how best to achieve it.

What is The Entourage Effect?

The entourage effect is a hypothesis that suggests that a combination of plant compounds from the cannabis plant produces a more effective result than consuming each cannabinoid individually. This effect is thought to occur due to the synergistic interaction between three different elements:

Cannabinoids – A group of chemical compounds found in the Cannabis plant. There are more than 100 cannabinoids that have been identified, the most well-known being tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). These compounds interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system, which plays a role in regulating various physiological processes such as mood, appetite, pain, and inflammation. Other cannabinoids found in cannabis include cannabigerol (CBG), cannabinol (CBN), and cannabichromene (CBC), each with their own unique properties and effects.

Terpenes – A large class of organic compounds found in many plants, including cannabis. They are responsible for the distinctive aromas and flavours associated with these plants. Some common terpenes found in cannabis include myrcene, limonene, and pinene, each with their own unique aromas. Myrcene is known for its relaxing and sedative effects, while limonene has been found to have potential anti-anxiety properties. However, much more study is needed to understand terpenes and their potential effects on the body. In addition, terpenes may also work in synergy with cannabinoids to enhance their effects.

Flavonoids – A group of natural compounds that are responsible for the colours in many plants, including cannabis. They play an important role in the plant’s health and growth, and have potential supportive qualities for humans as well. Some common flavonoids found in cannabis include quercetin, kaempferol, and apigenin, each with their own unique properties. For example, quercetin has been found to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, while apigenin may have potential sedative qualities. While more research is needed to fully understand the potential of flavonoids in cannabis, they are an important class of compounds to consider when exploring the Cannabis plant.

The cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids work together to produce a more significant impact on the body’s endocannabinoid system. While research is ongoing, studies have suggested that the entourage effect could enhance the wellness potential of cannabis-based products.

Can CBD isolate produce the Entourage Effect?

CBD isolate is a pure form of CBD that has been extracted from the cannabis plant and isolated from all other cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. Because it is free of other compounds, CBD isolate does not produce the entourage effect.

Full-spectrum CBD, on the other hand, contains all of the naturally occurring cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids found in the cannabis plant, including THC. THC is the psychotropic compound in cannabis that produces a “high” sensation.

Broad-spectrum CBD is similar to full-spectrum CBD in that it contains all of the naturally occurring cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids found in the cannabis plant, but with the THC removed. This makes it a desirable option for those who want to experience the potential entourage effect without the psychotropic effects of THC. Broad and Full-spectrum CBD are more likely to produce the entourage effect because of this inclusion of all if not most of the compounds in the Cannabis plant.

The type of CBD product that is best for an individual will depend on a variety of factors, including their individual response to CBD and their specific health concerns. Dosage and bioactivity are also important considerations when choosing a CBD product. It is always recommended to speak with a healthcare provider before starting a new CBD regimen.

Summary

The entourage effect is a phenomenon in which the combination of different cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids found in the cannabis plant work together to produce a stronger and more effective effect on the body than each compound alone. Although there is still ongoing research into the entourage effect, the idea is that the combined cannabinoids work synergistically to enhance their individual effects.

CBD products that contain CBD isolate do not produce the entourage effect because CBD isolate is 99% pure CBD with no other cannabinoids included. Full-spectrum CBD and broad-spectrum CBD, on the other hand, are more likely to produce the entourage effect due to the presence of a wide range of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids.

When choosing a CBD product, it is important to do research and select a product that is specific to your individual needs and lifestyle. It is also essential to obtain information from a reliable source, ideally from a source that has experience in the field of CBD.

Overall, the entourage effect is an exciting development in the field of cannabis research, and further studies are needed to fully understand its potential. By selecting the right CBD product for your needs and preferences, you may be able to take advantage of the entourage effect and experience the potential supportive qualities of the full range of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids found in the cannabis plant.
